DECATUR, Ga. Methodist women's basketball began the 2022-23 season down in Georgia for the Agnes Scott Tip-Off Classic on Friday. The Monarchs squared off with the host Scotties and were able to pull away late for a 68-60 win at the Woodruff Gymnasium.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Agnes Scott, 68-60
Records: Methodist 1-0, Agnes Scott 0-1
Location: Woodruff Gymnasium; Decatur, Georgia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist opened up the scoring with back-to-back buckets before a three by Agnes Scott made it a one point game. The Monarchs then opened it up by scoring the next nine straight points to make it 13-3. Methodist outscored the Scotties 6-3 in the final two minutes of the first quarter.
- A couple of threes by Kiley Hicks and Alyssa Shazer of the Monarchs extended their lead to 26 to 11. Agnes Scott would cut into the big Methodist advantage by going on an 8-0 run. With 90 seconds before the half, the Scotties kept their momentum going and only found themselves down by five, 29-24, at the break.
- Jillian Peterson put the Monarchs up 34-26 with her own three-pointer but Lindsey Moore of Agnes Scott matched Peterson with a three as well. Methodist got it back up to an eight point difference and maintained that for majority of the third period. In the last three minutes, the Scotties got hot again and closed the third on an 8-1 run to make it a one point, 42-41, game heading into the fourth.
- Just a few seconds into the fourth, Agnes Scott took their first lead of the contest, 43-42, with a jumper. The teams traded baskets before Ellia Chance of the Scotties made a jumper and was fouled on the play. This sent her to the line and she converted the and-one to put her team up by three. When it looked like all the momentum was on Agnes Scott's side, Jessica Drake of the Monarchs nailed a three then connected on another bucket to make it 50-48.
- Another big three by Drake followed by a steal and a fast break layup by Melissa D'Oleo made it a seven point difference, 60-53. Though Methodist struggled with free throws throughout the game, Drake and Hicks knocked down some key shots from the charity stripe to keep this game out of reach for Agnes Scott.
STAT FACTS
- Hick led all players with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Drake was right behind her with 19 points and six boards.
- The Monarchs were able to convert turnovers into points better than the Scotties. Methodist scored 23 points off turnovers compared to Agnes Scott's 12.
