Methodist Could Not Keep Up with Averett Second Half Shooting

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist men's basketball played their first home contest on Sunday against Averett University, in a non-conference game. The Monarchs could not keep up with the Cougars second half shooting and ended up losing by a score of 77-52 in the March F. Riddle Center.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Averett def. Methodist, 77-52
Records: Methodist 0-2, Averett 1-1
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Averett came out strong to start the game and were up quickly up 10-3 after a couple of threes. A bucket by Clayton Coe and a pair of free throws by T.J. East got Methodist back to within three. Two more threes by the Cougars put them just outside of a double digit but Coe knocked down his own three pointer to bring the deficit back down to six, 20-14.
  • For the next six minutes, the score differential stayed around that same amount until Averett tallied four straight points to claim the team's first 10+ lead. Miles Pauldin of the Cougars increased their lead even more with back-to-back layups, 35-22. Jeremy Mull and Derrion Hicklen brought the Monarchs closer to the score but one last lay-in by Bryson McLaughlin made it 39-28 at the half.
  • After a slow start to the second half, Averett would put this game out of reach by going on a 15-0 run in a seven-minute span. The final seven minutes of the game did see Methodist narrowly outscore the Cougars, 20-19, with Hicklen scoring 12 of those points for the Monarchs.
MORE TO IT
  • Averett shot the well in the game, specifically in the second half. As a team, the Cougars were shooting a little over 49% (26-53), including making 12 of their 23 (52.2%) shot attempts after the break.
  • Methodist had trouble out boxing out Averett under the glass, as the Cougars held a 43 to 26 margin in rebounds.
  • Four different Averett players finished with double digits points, with Raja Milton having a game-high 21 points. For the Monarchs, Hicklen led the team with 14 pts.
