A Big Start to the Fourth Allowed Greensboro to Beat Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist women's basketball was back in USA South Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening, at home, against Greensboro College. An early fourth quarter surge by the Pride was the difference maker in their 69-65 victory over the Monarchs inside the March F. Riddle Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist scored the first four points of the ballgame before Greensboro came right back to take a 5-4 edge. Later a three-pointer by Ta'Keria Legette put the Pride up by four but Jessica Drake responded with her own three to keep the Monarchs within one, 12-11. A late layup by Audrey Jennings made the score 18-14 in favor of Greensboro heading into the second quarter.
  • The Pride tallied four points to begin the new frame but a 6-0 run by Methodist got the team back to a one possession game, 22-20. The next six points were registered by Quadijah Moore of Greensboro to make it an eight-point difference. Before the break, the Monarchs cut the lead down to five, 33-28, following a lay in by Jillian Peterson.
  • Aneesa Irizarry would tie the game up at 38-38 after knocking down a pair of free throws. Jennings gave the Pride the lead again following a made bucket but then Methodist went on a 9-0 run to take a 47-40 advantage. A three by Karli Mason got Greensboro within four until Peterson matched with her own three ball on the ensuing possession to help keep it a seven-point difference at the end of third period.
  • The Pride dominated the start of the fourth by scoring 14 unanswered points to flip the script and put them up by seven now, 59-52. Drake recorded the first basket for the Monarchs, in the stanza, with a three-pointer. Twice Methodist would get the score down to a one possession game but could not get the key stop to either tie or take the lead for the remainder of the contest.
MORE TO IT
  • Greensboro had four scorers in double digits, including Moore with a game-high 21 points. The Monarchs had three players with 10 or more points and were led by Drake, respective with 17.
  • Having a nice overall performance Aniyah Tate for Methodist. She finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Including this contest, Tate has swiped three or more balls in four of her last five games.
  • Points off turnovers was a major factor in the win for the Pride. They forced 21 Monarchs turnovers and scored 32 points off them. Methodist were able make Greensboro turn the ball over 19 times but converted that to just 21 points.
UP NEXT
  • Methodist is off for some time until Monday, December 12, as Virginia Wesleyan University will make the trip to Fayetteville. The game is scheduled for 6 PM.
  • Greensboro heads back to their home court and will take on nationally ranked No. 5 Christopher Newport University this Saturday, at 2 PM.
