Methodist Holds Off Late Comeback by Virginia Wesleyan

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist women's basketball played a non-conference game against Virginia Wesleyan University on Monday evening. Despite the gross number of turnovers by both teams, the host Monarchs were able to come away with a 60-50 victory over the Marlins in the March F. Riddle Center.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Virginia Wesleyan, 60-50
Records: Methodist 5-2, Virginia Wesleyan 4-7
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After falling behind early, Jessica Drake drained a three to spark a 10-0 Methodist run to take an 11-3 advantage. The next six Monarchs points were scored by Ni'Jaa Wells to put her team up by double-digits. Jumpers by Sydnee Washington and Jada Norman brought Virginia Wesleyan back to within eight, 19-11, of the Methodist lead heading into the second frame.
  • Following four-point spurts by each squad, the Monarchs increased the deficit to 19 after an 11-0 run. The last four points of the Marlins came at the free throw line but only one cut into the lead as Melissa D'Oleo connected with her own three-pointer. The scoreboard would read 37-19 at halftime.
  • Methodist tallied eight of the first 10 points to begin the third period to push it to a 24-point difference, the team's largest lead of the contest. The remaining six minutes of the stanza saw Virginia Wesleyan outscoring the Monarchs to make the score 49-30 heading into the final quarter.
  • Kiley Hicks and Drake registered the next six points for the Monarchs to get their advantage back up to a 20+ lead, 55-33. That did not deter the Marlins from then going on a 14-0 run to bring the deficit all the way down to eight points, 55-47. Lenah Clements got to as low as a six-point difference for Virginia Wesleyan but Methodist was able to ice the rest of the game away by making their free throws.
MORE TO IT
  • More than half of the Monarch total points came off Marlins turnovers. Virginia turned the ball over 40 times and Methodist scored 35 points off those. The Monarchs almost had 30 turnovers themselves.
  • Hicks led the game with 17 points while collecting five rebounds. Drake was right behind her with 15 points as well as five boards. Sarah Ellis scored 12 points, which was the most for the Marlins.
  • Also with solid performances for Methodist tonight were Aneesa Irizarry and Wells. Irizarry scored five points, had three rebounds and recorded seven assists, matching a career-high. Wells finished with eight points and six rebounds.
