Monarchs Drop First Game of Cregger Invitational

SALEM, Va.  Methodist men's basketball returned to the hard wood to play in the 2022 Cregger Invitational, on Wednesday afternoon, and took on host Roanoke College in the first contest. This non-conference game saw the Monarchs compete well until the Maroons opened the flood gates, in their 94-55 victory, inside the Cregger Center.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Roanoke def. Methodist, 94-55
Records: Methodist 0-10, Roanoke 10-1
Location: Cregger Center; Salem, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scoring the first basket for Methodist was senior Montell Moore, with a three, but then Roanoke registered the next 10 points to take an early 12-3 advantage. Brone Brinson knocked down a three to help get the Monarchs back in the game, but a six point spurt gave the Maroons their largest lead of the first half, 25-12.
  • Eventually Methodist got a three from Derrion Hicklen to make it a seven-point game, 26-19, but Zach Rosenthal of Roanoke matched it with one of his seven made three-pointers. Every time the Monarchs brought the deficit down to single digits the Maroons responded right back. After Methodist tallied four straight points to get within eight, 37-29, Kasey Draper nailed a deep three as time expired to give Roanoke an 11-point lead.
  • Both teams started off well to begin the second half as each side was matching shot for shot. Consecutive layups by Clayton Coe got the Monarchs back to within a three possession game, 52-43, with a little under 15 minutes left on the clock. About two minutes later, the Maroons found themselves up by 18 after Rosenthal made three straight three balls.
  • Another six points were scored by Roanoke to wrap up their 15-0 run before Hicklen of Methodist finally put that to an end to it. From there the Monarchs shooting went cold while Roanoke started to heat up. The Maroons finished up their scoring with a late 16-0 run before Methodist freshman Brian Bullock recorded his first collegiate points, at the free throw line.
MORE TO IT
  • Brinson and T.J. East co-led the Monarchs in scoring with 10 each. Rosenthal had a game-high 25 points for Roanoke.
  • Methodist struggled with the battle on the glass. The Maroons were able to come down with 44 rebounds while the Monarchs managed only 26.
  • Second half shooting favored Roanoke as the team made 19 of their 31 shots (61.3%). The Maroons also connected on half (7 of 14) of their shots from behind the arc.
