FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist men's basketball hosted in city rival Fayetteville State University, a Division II institution, on Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs could not match the number of threes the Broncos were hitting, specifically in the second half, as Methodist lost by a score of 72-52 in the March F. Riddle Center.
This was essentially the third year in a row these two squads have squared off with each other. They did not meet during the 2020-21 shorten season due to Covid-19. Fayetteville State has now won all three prior meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After De'Shaun Kee scored the first basket for the Monarchs, the Broncos tallied the next seven points to take a 7-3 advantage. A jumper by Blake Lewis put Methodist in front again but it did not last long, as a couple of minutes later Tyler Foster knocked down a three-pointer to spark a 10-0 run by Fayetteville State.
- With 6:26 left in the first half, a Jeremy Mull bucket ended a three and half minute scoring drought by the Monarchs, 19-13. A quick four-point spurt by the Broncos increased their lead to double digits for the first time in the contest. A catch and shoot three by T.J. East brought Methodist back to within seven points but a last second three ball for Fayetteville State, by Cress Worthy, made it 32-22 at the break.
- The Broncos came out fast to begin the second half and outscored the Monarchs 9-3 to push the difference to 16 points. Together Clayton Coe and East registered the next seven Methodist points to make it 41-32, with 15:48 left on the clock.
- Over a 10-minute span, five of the next eight made baskets for Fayetteville State came from behind the arc and the Monarchs would find themselves down 62-42. Following a made jumper by Derrion Hicklen for Methodist, the Broncos scored seven consecutive points to put them up 69-44.
- Down the stretch Brone Brinson went on his own 6-0 run to make it a 19-point contest for the Monarchs. Brinson was involved in the final couple of plays for Methodist, as he got a steal that lead to an East layup for the last basket of the game.

- Fayetteville State shot exceptionally well in the ball game. The Broncos were 27 of 52 (51.9%) from the field, including 52% (13-25) from long range.
- Leading all scorers, with 18 points, was Foster of Fayetteville State. Brinson (14) had the most points for the Monarchs.
- Both East and Coe contributed well for Methodist. East finished with 12 pts, five rebounds and three steals. Coe had seven pts, six boards and four assists.
