HOW IT HAPPENED
- Derrick Newberry got things going for the Monarchs by splashing home consecutive threes, as Methodist opened up the game by scoring the first eight points. The Fighting Squirrels would settle the Monarchs offense down and get right back into the game, 14-13 in favor of Methodist, with a little more than 12 minutes left in the first half.
- Eventually Mary Baldwin took over the lead and go up by two possessions before back-to-back three balls by Newberry and Kevin McLaughlin Jr. put the Monarchs back in front 20-19. That advantage did not last long as the Fighting Squirrels went back up and held a steady lead two possession for the remainder of the first until McLaughlin hit a half court buzzer beater to make it 37-34.
- After the two teams exchanged baskets to start the second half, Newberry hit his fourth three of the game to spark an 11-0 run for Methodist to go up 47-39. Mary Baldwin craved into that lead by scoring the next four points, where the difference between the score stayed within five to six points for a good portion of the second half.
- The Fighting Squirrels teased a comeback late in the second, at the 2:38 mark, down 70-63. In a one-minute span they scored six unanswered points to bring the deficit down to one point. Luckily clutch shots by Dante Burden and Brone Brinson sealed the win Monarch win.
