HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights took the earlier lead before a layup by Melissa D'Oleo of the Monarchs closed it to within two, 8-6, four minutes into the first quarter. • The forced the Knights coach to call a timeout and after that Southern Virginia came out on a mission as they outscored the Monarchs 11-1 to close out the first. Kiley Hicks got the scoring going to start the second period for Methodist but than a 12-0 run by the Knights ballooned their advantage to a 22-point deficit, 37-15.
  • In the final three minutes before halftime, each team scored eight additional points to get to a 45-23 score at the break. The beginning of the third quarter started off well for the Monarchs as Aniyah Tate and Hicks each made a basket but those would be the only buckets the entire frame as Southern Virginia added on 11 more points for a score of 56-27 heading into the final period.
  • It did not get much better for Methodist as the Knights tacked on 10 more to continue a 19-0 run that started back in the third at the 7:21 mark. The only points the Monarchs scored in the last quarter were off of two free throws by Serenity Webb and a three by Zykeria Jenkins.
