Methodist Concludes Regular Season With Loss to Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON Va. Methodist women's basketball traveled to Mary Baldwin University, on Wednesday evening, for their last USA South Athletic Conference regular season game but came up short in their comeback attempt, 73-61, in the Physical Activities Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Monarchs started the opening frame in the lead going up by six after a three-pointer from Zytipha Joines. The Fighting Squirrels made offensive strides and tied the game 14 all with three minutes to go in the quarter. Jillian Peterson added a three for Methodist, seconds before the horn to put the Monarchs back on top, 20-19.
  • In a close second quarter, the teams exchanged baskets back and forth and encountered five tied scores before Methodist would take the lead. Aneesa Irizarry closed the second quarter going one for two from the line to keep the lead 42-37 over Mary Baldwin.
  • Demet Saygili from the fighting squirrels came out on fire after the half, helping the Fighting Squirrels to take the lead 47-42 after a made three. Mary Baldwin would go on to take their largest lead of the game to close the quarter, 63-49.
  • In a low scoring fourth quarter for both teams, Methodist was unable to gain an advantage and close the gap. The Fighting Squirrels take the win over the Monarchs, 73-61.

  • Three Monarchs finished in double figures, Aniyah Tate lead the team with 13, Peterson finished with 12 and Kiley Hicks had 10.
  • Mary Baldwin shot 39.7% from the field, 50% from threes going five for 10 from behind the arc and shot 66.7% from the line. Methodist shot 32.4% from the field, 21.7% from three-point range and 80% from the line, going 12 for 15 as a team.

Both teams move on to play in the USA South Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament that will kick-off this weekend, as each squad waits to find out where they will be seeded.
