Final score: Virginia Wesleyan def. Methodist, 13-10
Records: Methodist 1-1; Virginia Wesleyan 1-0
Location: Birdsong Field; Virginia Beach, Virginia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After no scoring in the first five minutes of the game, the Marlins strung together four consecutive goals in a three-minute span. The Monarchs finally got on the board with a score by Alaijah Ward off a free position shot and then 40 seconds later Keegan Foyles passed it to Rosa Williams for the second Methodist goal.
- The second quarter began with the Monarchs down 5-2 but it did not take long to double their score as they got two quick goals from Foyles and Ward. Methodist knotted it up at five when Foyles found the back of the net again, off a pass from Kayla Nee, but Virginia Wesleyan still claimed a halftime lead by scoring a goal with 22 seconds left.
- Both teams came out of the break sloppy with each side having four turnovers a piece. The Marlins answered first in the period and go on to score four unanswered goals to take a 10-5 advantage. The Monarchs lone goal in the third came from Ward before heading into the final stanza.
- Methodist slowly chipped into the deficit with Nee finding Payton Jones for the score and a couple of minutes later Foyles cashing in on a free position to make it 10-8, with 10:42 left on the clock. Virginia Wesleyan put the game on wraps by scoring the next three goals for a 13-8 score. In the final minute of play, Mikayla Ramos tacked on the final two goals for the Monarchs.
