Two Multi-Run Home Runs Enough to Lift Messiah Over Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist baseball is handed first loss of the season, in the opening game of the Diamond Invitational, on Friday evening with Messiah University coming to Armstrong-Shelley Field and winning 9-6 in a non-conference game.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Messiah def. Methodist, 9-6
Records: Methodist 2-1, Messiah 2-1
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs wasted no time at the start of the game as they generated four runs in the bottom of the first. Spencer Nelson drove in the first run off a single to center field.
  • Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Justin Blunt hit a single that would bounce off the first baseman's glove and head to the outfield. That allowed two runs to score with a third scoring off an error throw, which sailed behind the plate, by the Falcons.
  • Methodist made it 6-0 when Nelson smacked a deep fly ball to right center for a base clearing double.
  • In the top of the sixth, Messiah finally got to the Monarch starter with Joshua Ammons belting a 3-run home run over the left field wall. The next inning the Falcons took the lead, 7-6, after Clayton Roberts brought everyone home on a grand slam.
  • Messiah added two more insurance runs in the top half of the eighth for a three-run difference.
STAT FACTS
  • Rob Wilkerson had the most hits (3) for Methodist followed by Nelson with two. Roberts led the Falcons offense with three hits and four runs batted in.
  • After Messiah's starter was clobbered with six runs (five earned) on seven hits through four innings, reliver Noah Barrall came in and silenced the Monarchs bats but only allowing one hit in five innings of work.
  • Even though Wesley Hall had one official at-bat, 0 for 1, he still drew a career-high four walks.
