Methodist Come Away With One Win in Split Squad Action

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist's women's tennis team operated under a split squad concept Saturday, as the visiting Monarchs were beaten 7-0 by Elon University at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, while Methodist hosted William Peace University at the Gene Clayton Tennis Center and came out victorious by a 9-0 decision.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Elon def. Methodist, 7-0; Methodist def. William Peace, 9-0
Records: Methodist 1-3, Elon 5-3, Sweet Briar 0-1
Locations: Gene Clayton Tennis Center, Fayetteville, N.C.; Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, Elon, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • As expected, the Phoenixes were too much for the Monarchs to handle. Kamdyn Balko did the best in her number three singles flight with her sets loses of 6-1, 6-4.
  • The match in Fayetteville was a much better outcome for Methodist, as they started off 3-0 after winning all the doubles. Though in the No. 1s doubles, it could have gone either way for Veva Willocks and Charlize Martinez, of the Monarchs, as they had to go to a tie breaker against Hayley McNair and Camryn Straughn and defeated them 9-7 in the extra to win 8-7 for the flight.
  • Alex Pratt and Sydney Bird took care of their single flights with ease by sweeping their counterparts 6-0 in each set. Valeria Matute almost had a clean sweep as well but Straughn would win one point during the first set before ultimately falling 6-1, 6-0.
  • Willocks and McNair had a battle in the No. 2 singles. McNair would take the first set from Willocks then a tough second set was forced to go to a tie breaker. Willocks would prevail by winning 8-6 to send the flight into a super tie breaker, where Willocks pulled it out 10-5.
  • During the No. 5 flights, Imani Bellamy got the victory over Abbie Papale with mirror set scores of 6-2.
