Jones' Overtime Goal Lifts Monarchs Over Knights

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. An exciting start to the 2022 season for Methodist women's lacrosse, as they defeat St. Andrews University in overtime, 12-11 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.

A close battle throughout the game resulted in a three-minute overtime, tied at 11 all. Payton Jones' last second goal would give the Monarchs a victory over the Knights, and the team's first win of the season.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. St. Andrews, 12-11
Records: Methodist 1-0; St. Andrews 0-1
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist attacked early with a goal from Mikayla Ramos following her draw control win. Both teams continued to exchange goals throughout the first two quarters as St. Andrews tied the game four all in the final ten seconds before halftime.
  • Three goals were scored between both teams within a one-minute span late in the third quarter. The first goal was scored by Keegan Foyles to tie the game 7-7, but the Knights answered on the next draw control, taking less than ten seconds to take the lead. The Monarchs immediately responded as Foyles found Ramos for a shot to tie the game 8-8.
  • Late in the fourth quarter, St. Andrews took the lead by one goal, with over three minutes left in play. After Marven Bravo, of the Knights, saved a free position shot taken by Julee Delellis, Foyles picked up the ground ball and attacked the net to tie the game 11 all to send it into overtime.
  • As the clock was winding down in overtime, Payton Jones created enough space between her and the defender to squeeze a shot past St. Andrews' goalie, with one second left on the clock, and take the victory. Jones' game winner tallied her fourth goal of the game and the Monarch's first win of the season.

NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Along with Jones, Foyles also scored four goals for Methodist. Jalessa Batchelor led with six ground balls picked up.
  • Jem Golombeski had a co-game-high seven saves in only one half worth of action on the field.
