FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist baseball split in doubleheader against Susquehanna University on Sunday afternoon. After going extra innings in the first game, the Monarchs fell short 3-2 but turned around and dominated in the second game to defeat the River Hawks 14-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In Game 1, Susquehanna scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, as Methodist remained scoreless until the fifth. Jacob Austin hit a single to right field to advance Gavin Wheeler home to make it 2-1.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the Monarchs tied the game two all after a balk by the River Hawks. With neither team able to score a run by the ninth inning, the game went three extra innings before Susquehanna hit two back-to-back doubles to take a one run lead.
- The Monarchs were unable to bring runners on second and third home before the final out of the game, and the River Hawks walked away with a 3-2 win.
- After a tough loss in Game 1, Methodist was hungry at the start of Game 2, as the team hit five hits in the first to score three early runs. It was all gas and no breaks for the Monarchs as they scored four more runs through the third and fifth innings.
- Susquehanna attempted to close the gap, narrowing the lead to four (8-4) in the top of the seventh, but Methodist found the sweet spot and went yard ball for two home runs to bring in five runs and stretch the lead,14-4. The first was a grand slam from Rob Wilkerson and the second was a single homer from Spencer Nelson.
- The remainder of the game was held scoreless for both teams as Methodist took the victory.
STAT FACTS
- Wilkerson hit his first career grand slam, earning four runs batted in, while also going three for four at the plate. Nelson also tallied three hits and four RBIs in Game 2 and Wheeler finished with three hits.
- The Monarchs out hit the River Hawks in Game 2 by a slight few, 15-13 but capitalized on the hits to score 14 runs.
- Austin Skipper earned his first win of the season and first win as a Monarch while on the mound in Game 2.
