Methodist and Carolina Each Walk Away with One Win on the Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist softball dropped one game at Price Field, on Tuesday afternoon, to non-conference opponent Carolina University, after killing it in Game 1 to win 5-0 and lost a close one in the top of the sixth inning for Game 2, 5-6.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. Carolina, 5-0; Carolina def. Methodist, 6-5
Records: Methodist 7-12; Carolina 9-12
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game 1 saw Methodist starter Brittany Jones pitch all seven innings giving up only two hits, no runs, one walk, and six strikeouts.
  • After only getting two hits throughout the first five innings, the Monarchs' bats caught fire in the bottom of the sixth to score five straight runs. Maria Kollar, Haley Fethke, Meaghan Himes and Bethany Junker all contributed single hits in the team's effort to score five runs.
  • The Monarchs defense went three up three down in the top of the seventh to take the win 5-0 over the Bruins.
  • Game 2 saw a lot more hits, as Methodist out hit Carolina 12-10 for the game. The first inning opened with Carolina getting four hits to score two runs right off the bat. An inning and a half later, the Monarchs scored one off a single to left field by Heather Tsapp.
  • It was a close game throughout as the game was tied up twice, the first in the top of the fourth at 3-3 and the second time in the top of the sixth at 5-5. After the Bruins took the lead at the end of the top of the sixth, 6-5, the Monarchs four hits between the sixth and seventh innings was not enough to bring in a run.
NUMBERS
  • Methodist out hit Carolina in both games, 7-2 in Game 1 and 12-10 in Game 2.
  • Himes and Junker led the team in Game 1 with two hits each while Fethke and Tsapp led the team with three hits in Game 2. Tsapp finished Game 2 with two runs batted in.
