Freshman Duo Help Methodist to a Split with Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist softball squared off with city rivals Fayetteville State University in a pair of non-conference match-ups on Saturday. Each side left Price Field with one win a piece.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final Score: Methodist def. Fayetteville State 4-2, Fayetteville State def. Methodist 6-5
Records: Methodist 8-13; William Peace 5-11
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • During the second inning of Game 1, Rebekah Haigler came up to the plate for her first at-bat of the day with runners on second and third. She then hit a bases clearing single to score the first two runs of the contest.
  • An inning later, the exact same scenario occurred to Haven Williams, and she was also successful in getting the ball to the outfield to double the Monarchs run total, 4-0.
  • Methodist pitcher Brittany Jones was mowing down the Broncos lineup for majority of the game before finding some trouble in the fifth. Fayetteville State would load the bases when a hit to center field plated two Bronco runs. Luckily that was the only damage as the Monarchs were able to get out of the inning.
  • Game 2 saw Methodist take an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning. First, Maria Kollar drove in Bethany Junker on a double and then later Kollar scored on a wild pitch.
  • For the entire day so far, Fayetteville State did not lead at any point between the two contests until the fourth. A string of hits led to the Broncos tacking on four runs to take an 4-2 lead.
  • After Fayetteville State had a great 4th, they did not have a tremendous fifth as the Monarchs took advantage of multiple Bronco errors for an additional three runs to go back in front. 5-4.
  • Unfortunately for Methodist, Fayetteville State managed to plated two more runs to put them ahead once more. The Monarchs had a big opportunity to tie, or even win, the game in the bottom of the seventh when they had runners on second and third but could get them to cross.
STAT FACTS
  • Jones was once again solid in the circle after giving up two runs off four hits in seven innings, while striking out seven and walking one.
  • Methodist had plenty of chances to score more runs in the two games. This is shown in the number of runners left on base as the Monarchs left 21 stranded in both game combined compared to the Broncos eight.
UP NEXT
Methodist will travel to conference newcomer Southern Virginia University to start USA South Athletic Conference play on March 26 for two games starting at 1 PM.
