Strong Pitching by Jones Gets Monarchs One Win Over Eagles

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.  Methodist softball spent the day in Myrtle Beach for a non-conference doubleheader with the University of Mary Washington, where each team took away one win. Eagles were victorious 8-1 in game one than the Monarchs claimed the second game 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon, at NMB Sports Complex.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Mary Washington def. Methodist, 8-1; Methodist def. Mary Washington, 2-0
Records: Methodist 6-7; Mary Washington 5-6
Location: NMB Sports Complex; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Majority of Mary Washington's runs, in Game 1, came in the top of the second. Methodist starter Alyssa Barwick gave up two hits within the first three batters followed by a couple of errors by the Monarch defense during the next three batters led to the Eagles scoring seven runs (one earned).
  • Both sides would score one run in the fourth inning, as sacrifice fly brought in the final run for Mary Washington. Methodist's lone run came off an RBI double by Meaghan Himes.
  • Brittany Jones was masterful in the circle for Game Two only giving up three hits, one walk, and striking out seven Eagles batters for a complete game shutout. Mary Washington's starter, Taylor Hudson, threw exceptionally well herself by also going all seven, allowing three hits, two runs (zero earned), issuing six walks and striking out 12 Monarchs.
  • Once again Himes is credited with an RBI on a fielder's choice to drive in the eventually game-winning run, in the third. Kayleigh Raynor added an additional run with a single.
NUMBERS
  • Through both games, Methodist had a total of five hits.
  • Rebekah Haigler (1 H, 1 BB, & 2 Ks) and Heidi Layne (0 H & 3 Ks) pitched in relief during the first game, each for an inning.
