Seventh Inning Rally Came up Short in First Game as Methodist Drops Both Contests to Ferrum

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Visiting Ferrum College defeated Methodist in a doubleheader sweep, 8-7 and 10-0, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Ferrum def. Methodist, 8-7; Ferrum def. Methodist, 10-0 (5 Inn.)
Records: Methodist 6-8; Ferrum 6-2
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ferrum started Game 1 on a hot streak, scoring four runs in the top of the second off a double to left field, followed by a triple down the right field line to go up 4-0.
  • After the Panthers took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third, Methodist tallied one run from a dropped fly ball to send Bethany Junker home.
  • It was 8-1 going into the seventh inning, the largest deficit of the game but things got interesting for the Monarchs. The team rallied back to score six straight runs, the first two from a single to right center field by Rebekah Haigler. The next two runs came from Haley Fethke's single through the left side and the final two runs scored off Kaley Evan' s hit to right field before the last out ended the game 8-7, Ferrum.
  • In a quick second game, the Panthers got out to another strong start in the box, scoring four runs in the top of the second off three hits.
  • The Monarchs were unable to avoid the mercy rule ending after scoring no runs in the bottom of the fifth.

STAT FACTS
  • Junker led the team with three hits in Game 1.
  • Brittany Jones had six strikeouts from the mound in Game 1 and Alyssa Barwick finished with three.
