Methodist Rally Comes Up Short as Averett Hangs on for the Win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Even though Methodist women's lacrosse scored a season-high 16 goals on Saturday afternoon, the Monarchs were unable to pullout the win, dropping a USA South Athletic Conference game against Averett University 18-16 at Monarch Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tia Marlinghaus and Keegan Foyles scored the first two goals of the game for Methodist. The Cougars then scored three unanswered goals before a Mikayla Ramos goal assisted by Kayla Nee tied the game up at three all. Averett scored another goal to end the first quarter up 4-3.
  • In the second quarter the Cougars scored four straight goals before a goal by Nee, which was assisted by Erika Henry, ended the half at 8-4.
  • After a quick Averett goal to start the third quarter, the Monarchs went on a scoring spree, netting five consecutive goals to knot the game up at nine. The Cougars would go on their own run, 5-2, including two goals in the last 30 seconds to end the quarter up 14-11.
  • In the final 15 minutes of play, Averett had extended their lead by as many as five. Payton Jones and Ramos combined for three goals the final three minutes but Methodist was unable to complete the comeback.
FAST FACTS
  • Marlinghaus, Foyles, Nee and Jones all scored a team-high three goals. Nee also had a career-high five assists.
  • Jazmine Henry led the team with five ground balls.
  • The Cougars were highly successful in their free position chances. Averett converted seven of 10 shots into scores while the Monarchs were only able to get one of their eight chances past the keeper.
  • Draw controls were favored by the Cougars (24-14), with Elizabeth Peasley winning 11 times & Adriana Perez getting eight. Julee Delellis had a team-high six for Methodist.

The Monarchs will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina for the next game, a USA South conference bout on Tuesday, March 27 against William Peace at 7 p.m.
