THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. William Peace,
Records: Methodist 4-5, (2-2 USA So.) William Peace 1-8 (0-5)
Location: WakeMed Soccer Park; Cary, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist broke out on a 7-0 run in the first quarter, with each goal scored by a different Monarch. Kendal Cahill scored the last goal of the quarter to tally her first collegiate goal at the four minute mark.
  • After a strong first quarter with no shots allowed from William Peace, Methodist slipped up and gave the Pacers their first, and only goal of the game three minutes into the second quarter.
  • By the end of the second frame, Alaijah Ward and Payton Jones had both scored their third goals, followed by Tia Marlinghaus with her second to begin a 10-goal running clock. In the mix, Macey Blackburn, the freshman from Sparrows Point, Maryland found the back of the rack, and scored her first collegiate goal from an assist by Kayla Nee.
  • The third and fourth quarters ran the same course as the Monarchs extended the lead to 16-1. Jones found Morgan Eggleston near the goal, and slipped her a dime pass to tally her first goal this season. Three minutes later, within a two minute time frame, Mikayla Ramos scored back-to-back goals.
  • Through the fourth quarter, Methodist passed the ball around the outside to stall the clock, only taking five shot attempts to score two goals. Blackburn recorded her second goal in the final minute of play, to register the final goal of the game, securing an 18-1 win over William Peace.

STAT FACTS
  • Jones led the team with four goals, scoring three of the four in the first half, setting the tone early.
  • Ward was second on the team with three goals, Ramos and Marlinghaus each had two.
  • Nee had a team-high three assists, to go along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Blackburn had a career night, scoring two goals, three assists and three ground balls.
  • Methodist was clearly the better team in the first half and they rode that opening 30 minute period to victory. En route to a 13-1 halftime advantage, the Monarchs bested the Pacers in almost every category-- shots taken (52-5), ground balls (29-16), and clearing rate (90 percent to 44 percent).
  • As for draw controls, the Monarchs dominated in this category as well, winning 16 to possess the ball 12 more times than the Pacers (8).
  • Both goalies saw minimal action, as Jem Golombeski and Ashley Fuentes split halves, each only recording one save and Golombeski allowing only one goal.
