HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just like most games this season, Methodist would get to the opposing starter quickly, in Game 1, as by the end of the second inning they found themselves up 9-3. A large part of that is due to Justin Blunt going 2 for 2 and driving in three runners, in the early goings.
- Following the 4th where both teams added on two additional runs, the Monarchs went on to score five consecutive runs in the 6th & 7th to push their lead to double digits, 16-5. Piedmont managed to get two of those runs back in the bottom of the 7th.
- The last two innings saw Methodist tack on three more runs while the Lions only brought in one.
- Game 2 started out with each side picking up one run in the first inning. During the 2nd, Monarch seniors Jacob Austin and Spencer Nelson each had hits to bring in two runs, along with Stancil Bowles knocking in a run, to go up 6-1 but the Lions were able to cut the deficit in half with their at-bats, 6-3.
- After giving up the three runs early on, Methodist starter William St. Leger found himself on cruise control by going seven strong innings of work before leaving with a 9-3 lead. Than Piedmont pounced on the Monarch relievers in the 8th to tie the game 9-9.
- Methodist had a good chance of taking back the lead during the ninth when they had a runner on second, with one out. That would be squandered though as the Lions shortstop made an amazing catch on a line drive over his followed by doubling off the runner heading back to second.
- Piedmont eventually walked the game off in the 10th after the first two batters reached base. Now with runners on first and a second, the next batter hit a ball to left field and without hesitation the Lions head coach sent his runner home to win the game.
STAT FACTS
- In Game 1, saw Blunt go 5 for 5 with six RBIs, both are career-highs, while scoring four times and walked once. Wesley Hall also came around to score four time after going 4 for 5 at the plate.
- Jarrett Hall, who is the winning pitcher of the first game, picked up his first collegiate win of the career.
- Austin would come up a homerun shy of hitting the cycle in the second game, as he had a single, double, and a triple in his 3 for 6 effort.
