FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist's men's tennis was handed their first two losses of the season by dropping a pair of matches to the University of Richmond by identical scores of 6-1 on Saturday at Gene Clayton Tennis Center.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Richmond def. Methodist 6-1; Richmond def. Methodist 6-1
Records: Methodist 4-2, Richmond 6-4
Location: Gene Clayton Tennis Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 9 a.m. match, the Spiders won all three doubles matches but just barely. Jordan Theron & Quinn McNamara made it difficult in the Number 1's doubles by only losing 9-7 to the team of John Walsh and Campbell Erwin.
- Henry Murray & Luke Laney would also challenge their opposites of Josh Keitelman & Alex Wernick. Ultimately falling in No. 2 doubles but by a score of 9-7 as well. The Monarchs got their lone win of the day thanks to Theron in the No. 1 singles flight by taking down Walsh 6-4, 6-2
- In No. 3 singles flight, McNamara made things interesting against Wernick, where the first set had to go to a tie breaker but McNamara could not pull it out as he fell 7-4 in the extra to lose the set 7-6. Wernink won the second set by a much easier score of 6-2.
- During the second match, Murray & Laney were promoted from No. 2 to No. 1 doubles to play Walsh & Erwin. Just like in the earlier match of the day, Walsh & Erwin would not be handed the flight as Murray & Laney made it tough but were beaten 8-6.
- After taking all the doubles flights, Richmond would torch Methodist in four of the six singles flights by sweeping 6-0 in each one.
- Once again it was Theron who got the Monarchs their sole victory of the afternoon. The first set had to go to a tie breaker once the set reached 6-6 and Erwin could not out last Theron by dropping 7-4 in the tie. Than Theron took the second set 6-2 to win the flight.
