DANVILLE, Va. Methodist baseball started off strong against the Cougars of Averett University on Friday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field, but barely scraped by in the bottom of the ninth to win game one of the USA South three game series, 11-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs opened the game early with two runs, scoring the first off a double to right center field from Wesley Hall. With Hall on second, Stancil Bowles singled through the right side gap to score the second run.
- Methodist advanced to a 4-0 lead before Averett tallied their first run on the board.
- The top of the seventh inning witnessed a solid at bat performance from the Monarchs. The team scored four runs off four hits, one of which was a bomb from Spencer Nelson who hit a three-run homer over the left field fence.
- Gavin Wheeler followed up by scoring the final run of the game with a double down the left field line to round Hall home.
- The Cougars managed to score four more runs in the bottom of the ninth in an attempt to close the gap but Methodist squeaked by with an 11-10 win.
STAT FACTS
- Hall had a sound performance as he went five-for-five on the day to go along with two RBIs.
- Rob Wilkerson and Wheeler both fell in behind Hall with two hits and one RBI each.
- Stats across the board were even among both teams as the Monarchs hit two more hits than the Cougars.
