Monarch Freshman Come Up Big to Earn Split with Pacers

RALEIGH, N.C.  Methodist softball managed to regroup from their first loss, 9-0, to William Peace University to win the second game, 15-7, to split the series on Saturday afternoon, in USA South Athletic Conference play, at the WPU Softball Complex.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: William Peace def. Methodist, 9-0 (5 Inn.); Methodist def. William Peace, 15-7
Records: Methodist 17-18 (9-5 USA South), William Peace 24-11 (12-6)
Location: WPU Softball Complex; Raleigh, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite the ending score of Game 1, the Monarchs were still very much in the game. Methodist only found themselves down 2-0 after the third inning but costly errors in the fourth allowed the Pacers to stretch out their lead to 9-0.
  • Game 2 was a much different story of the Monarchs, as this time they were the ones that took advantage of William Peace's errors by scoring three to start the second inning. Freshman Haven Williams got Methodist their final two runs of the inning by belting her first collegiate home run to take a 5-0 lead.
  • By the start of the fifth, the Monarchs increased their lead to 8-0 after scoring one run in third and two in the fourth. The Pacers scored their first run the game in the fourth as well.
  • In the fifth, Williams made her mark again in the game with an RBI double. A couple of batters later Kayleigh Raynor would triple down the right field line to score Williams, and Raynor eventually came across herself, on a pass ball, to it to 11-1.
  • William Peace avoided being run-ruled by connecting on a three-run homer to make it 11-4, and added three addition runs in the sixth for a 11-7 ball game. The Monarchs got those three runs back in the top of seventh.
STAT FACTS
  • The youth of the Methodist lineup sure looked good in the second game. Raynor and Williams each had three RBIs and fellow freshman Rebekah Haigler had a fine 3 for 3 day & 2 RBIs.
  • Their 15 runs, in a game, was the second-most this season. The only game they score more was when the team tallied 18 runs back on February 20th.
UP NEXT
  • Methodist hits the road one last time for an USA South double header with North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday beginning at 2 PM.
  • William Peace will wrap up their regular season on Wednesday as they play their last USA South games against Pfeiffer University starting at 2 PM.
