Methodist Able to Pull Out Win in Close Game Against Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C.  Methodist baseball was able to hang onto a one-run lead in the ninth inning of Saturday's USA South Athletic Conference match to beat Pfeiffer University 6-5 at Joe Ferebee Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Pfeiffer, 6-5
Records: Methodist 24-11 (14-3 USA South), Pfeiffer 14-16 (10-7)
Location: Joe Ferebee Field; Misenheimer, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Spencer Nelson drove in the first two runs for the Monarchs with a single back up the middle. Nelson himself came around to score on a wild pitch, and Methodist wrapped up their first inning scoring, with a Justin Blunt RBI single, to take a 4-0 lead.
  • The Falcons felt like they could have had a big inning in the fourth, when they had bases loaded with one out. The Monarchs would limit the treat by giving up one run before getting an inning ending double play.
  • After staying fairly quiet through the first four innings of play, Pfeiffer made some noise in the fifth. The Falcons collected five which lead to four runs coming around and giving them a 5-4 advantage.
  • This did not stop Methodist from finding a way to take back the lead, which they were able to accomplish in the eighth. First a lead-off double got the tying run in scoring position before a sacrifice bunt got the runner to third.
  • Following a hit by pitch to put runners on the corners, Will Dagenhart was next to bat and laid down a great bunt up the first base line to score the tying run. In that same sequence though Pfeiffer committed a costly error that allowed our runner from first to sprint around the bases and score the go ahead run.
  • Now back in the sixth inning, Andrew Baur came into pitch after the Falcons chased the Monarchs starter out of the game. Baur would silence Pfeiffer's bats for the next three innings before getting into some trouble in the ninth.
  • The ninth started off with a lead-off hit by the Falcons and two batters later a walk would put runners on first & second, with one out. Baur would then lock it down by striking out and forcing a pop up to end the game.
STAT FACTS
  • The only Methodist batter with a multi-hit day was senior Rob Wilkerson. He went 4 for 5 with a double at the plate.
  • Baur is credited with the victory after tossing four innings of relief work. He allowed two hits and registered four Ks to one walk.
  • With his one hit today, Gavin Wheeler is riding a 14-game hitting streak that dates back to March 27.
