Methodist Takes Down Piedmont in Conference Quarterfinals

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist women's lacrosse team survived and advanced after the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Monarchs defeated the visiting Lions of Piedmont University 19-9 on Tuesday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
 
The Methodist women's lacrosse team has not competed in the USA South Athletic Conference Women' s Lacrosse Tournament since 2019.
 
For the second game in a row, Mikayla Ramos posted another career-day after recording a new career-high seven goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Off the jump, Methodist dominated on the offensive end, securing six of the seven draw controls to go on a 6-0 run. The first six goals came off straight drives to the rack as all six were unassisted.
  • The Lions scored their first goal after eight minutes of play, followed by another goal to close the 6-0 gap to 6-2.
  • Methodist kept the pedal to the medal and went on another run through the end of the first and beginning of the second quarters, extending the Monarchs lead to 11-2.
  • At the start of the second half, Ramos and Alaijah Ward went on a tandem as Ward dished it off to Ramos twice, to score two back-to-back goals and impose the 10-goal running clock.
  • With the score now 18-7 going into the fourth quarter, Piedmont could not manage a comeback as the Lions only scored two more goals, early in the quarter.
  • Methodist was one goal shy of continuing the 20+ goal streak as they defeated the Lions, 19-9.
STAT FACTS
  • Methodist destroyed Piedmont in draw controls, winning 23 out of the 30 total for the game. Julee Delellis and Tia Marlinghaus did most of the damage, as they totaled six each.
  • As a team, Methodist out shot Piedmont 41-21, with 30 of the shots being on goal.
  • Jem Golombeski had a good day in the net, tallying eight saves to limit the Lions just under 10 goals.
  • Along with Ramos, Rosa Williams and Ward collected three goals each and although Keegan Foyles and Kayla Nee did not have their usual scoring day, they still contributed with three assists each.

Methodist will continue on in the USA South Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament to play in the semifinals against Meredith College on Friday, April 29 in Raleigh, N.C. at 3 p.m.
