FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. We had ourselves a Friday night thriller between Methodist baseball and North Carolina Wesleyan College, as both teams are fighting for the top seed of the east in the USA South Athletic Conference. The Monarchs got the better of the Battling Bishops, in the ninth inning, and won 4-3 at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan 4-3
Records: Methodist 26-12 (16-3 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 23-15 (15-4)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was quite the pitcher's duel the fans saw between Derrick Carter of N.C. Wesleyan and William St. Leger of Methodist. Both were dealing until the sixth inning, when each of them got into some trouble.
- The first Battling Bishop batter, in the top of the sixth, was hit by St. Leger's pitch and eventually got to third off a failed pick-off attempt before scoring on a hit to left. During the Monarchs at-bats, a couple of hits and hit by pitches led to three runs coming around to give Methodist a 3-1 advantage at the end.
- Now do not count N.C. Wesleyan out of the contest just yet as they were able to tally two runs in the eighth to even the score at 3-3. First a sacrifice fly got one run to score followed by a bases loaded walk plated the other.
- The Battling Bishops tried to make some more noise in the ninth, when they had two runners on base with only one out. Monarchs' relief pitcher Chase Carroll did not shy away from the challenge and the freshman would get a fly out and a strikeout to end the top of the inning.
- During the bottom part, a hit than a fielder's choice would put Stancil Bowles on first for Methodist, with one out. Up comes Charles Jordan to the plate and he found a pitch he liked and send it to the gap in right center. Bowles got on his high horse and sprinted from first to home for a walk-off victory.
STAT FACTS
- N.C. Wesleyan had their chances to win this game. The proof of this is shown in the number of runners left on base (10). The Monarchs would strand six themselves.
- Leading the way in the hits department for Methodist was Christian Yarbrough and Will Dagenhart, with two apiece.
- Carroll gets his second win of the season tonight after pitching the final 1.2 innings. St. Leger gets the tough draw of a no-decision with his seven innings of work. He gave up one run (0 earned) on seven hits and punched out five batters.
