Methodist 9th Inning Comeback Comes Up Just Short

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist baseball had the rally caps going on Saturday in their USA South Athletic Conference game against North Carolina Wesleyan College. The Monarchs though were unable to get across the final couple of run they needed and fall to the Battling Bishops 10-9 at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist 10-9
Records: Methodist 26-13 (16-4 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 24-15 (16-4)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The scoring for both teams got started in the second inning with N.C Wesleyan striking first on a Methodist error to plate the first run followed by getting a second score off a hit. The Monarch had bases loaded with zero outs during their at-bats but only managed to get one run to come home.
  • A few innings later, Gavin Wheeler tied the ballgame, 2-2, for Methodist with an RBI single.
  • The Monarch's pitching was doing decently well to this point until things started to unravel in the 6th and 7th. First the Battling Bishops plated one run in the sixth before tacking on five more in the seventh to push their new lead to 8-2.
  • Now down by six, all Methodist could try to do to stay in the game was chip away at the lead within the final three innings. Charles Jordan helped that cause with a hit down the left field line to drive in one run. Up next was Christian Yarbrough, who got a hold of one and sent it over the left field fence for a 3-run blast to make it a brand-new contest at 8-6.
  • N.C. Wesleyan was able to give themselves a little bit more of a cushion with their lead by scoring a run in both the eighth and ninth, 10-6.
  • The comeback attempt was on in bottom of the ninth for the Monarchs and they got off to great start with back-to-back hits by Jordan and Yarbrough to put runner on second and third with no outs. Next was Jacob Austin, who reached on a fielding error, allowing one run to score and still have no outs.
  • Rob Wilkerson kept the lineup going with his own base hit to get Yarbrough to come around, making it 10-8. The Battling Bishops would get the next two batters out so the Monarchs were down to their final out.
  • Wheeler worked a walk to get on and put a Methodist runner on every base. A second fielding error by N.C. Wesleyan saw the Monarchs make it a one-run game and still bases juiced. Unfortunately, Methodist's luck finally ran out as the Battling Bishops struck out the last batter to end the game.
STAT FACTS
  • Yarbrough was a big part of the near comeback by Methodist. He was 3 for 5 at the plate, with a double and a HR, and had a team-high three RBIs.
  • N.C. Wesleyan was not allowing the Monarch pitchers to get the better of them during their at-bats. As a team they did not strike out once in this contest compared to the Methodist batters, who struck out 10 times.
UP NEXT
Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan face off one last time this weekend, on May 1, and it will be an important game for both teams. They both sit atop the USA South east standing at 16-4 in conference play. This means the winner of tomorrow's game will be the east side regular season champion and will host one of the two brackets of the upcoming conference baseball tournament.
