Methodist 18 Run Day Led to Series Sweep of Mary Baldwin

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. It was another tee-off day for Methodist baseball as they defeated the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University handily, 18-5, in the final game of the USA South Athletic conference weekend series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the Monarchs first at bat, the team opened the game with four hits, along with two errors by the Fighting Squirrels to score three unearned runs.
  • After a three up three down inning in the top of the second, Methodist tallied four more hits during their next at bat.
  • Rob Wilkerson hit a shot to center field, rounding Christian Yarbrough home for the Monarchs fourth run of the game. Wilkerson then scored after a throw down attempt by Mary Baldwin to pick off Spencer Nelson, but both were safe.
  • Wesley Hall brought in the sixth run of the game after a hit up the middle which led to a throwing error by the second baseman from a back hand scoop.
  • The Fighting Squirrels scored their first run of the game in the top of the third before scoring their next run in the top of the fifth.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Bowles drove a shot down the right field line allowing himself to trek all the way to third base for a triple. With Bowles on third, Will Dagenhart hit a hot shot to the third basemen to bring Bowles home.
  • The Monarchs scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh before giving up three runs in the top of eighth. Mary Baldwin closed the gap to 10-5, but Methodist keep the ball rolling in the bottom of the eighth.
  • After two pitching changes for the Fighting Squirrels in the bottom of the eighth, the Monarchs put up eight runs to leak out 18-5 and force the conference mercy rule. The game was called after Caleb Greene crossed home plate.
STAT FACTS
  • Poor fielding by the Fighting Squirrels led to their seven errors which resulted in 10 unearned runs for the Monarchs. Methodist committed one error for the game.
  • Even with the Fighting Squirrels errors, the Monarchs out hit Mary Baldwin 17-10.
  • Bowles was one homerun shy of posting a cycle for the game as he went four-for-five with a single, double, and triple, earning one RBI.
  • Followed by Bowles was Hall and Wilkerson each with three hits.
  • Ryan Hill reached a special career achievement during the first inning when he struck out the fourth batter of the day, tallying his 100th career strikeout from the mound. In the six innings pitched, he went on to record five more strikeouts to go along with six hits, one run earned and three walks.

Methodist travels to Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, April 6 for a mid-week non-conference game at 3 p.m.
 
Mary Baldwin will look to also play a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 6 at the University of Mary Washington.
