Monarchs Take Advantage of Costly Knights' Errors

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist baseball hosted Southern Virginia University for the first time at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Friday afternoon, taking game 1 of the three-game series, 9-4 over the Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist's lead off batter, Rob Wilkerson took a swing on the first pitch, sending it just over the right center field wall to score the first run for the Monarchs.
  • In the bottom of the third, Methodist hit two solid hits to put runners on second and third. Wesley Hall's sacrifice fly to center field allowed Jacob Austin to tag up and score the second run of the game.
  • The Knights posted a strong fourth inning at the plate, taking a 4-2 lead after scoring four runs off four hits. The Monarchs lone error of the game contributed to one of those runs.
  • The fifth and sixth innings went by quickly, witnessing only one hit between both squads.
  • Methodist opened the game up in the bottom of the seventh, hitting five singles to land three runs. Spencer Nelson, Casey Nichols, Gavin Wheeler, Hall and Austin all contributed to the hits, putting the Monarchs back on top, 7-4.
  • In the top of the eighth, Southern Virginia loaded the bases with two outs, but Tanner Freeland forced the Knights batter to lineout to right field for a routine play by Justin Blunt to get the third out.
  • Southern Virginia struggled in the field in bottom of the eighth, committing three errors which lead to two more runs for Methodist.
  • The Monarchs held the Knights scoreless in the final inning and closed out the game with a 9-4 win.
STAT FACTS
  • Austin and Nelson co-led the team in hits with two, while Hall followed with one hit and two RBIs.
  • Freeland had a strong day at the mound, allowing no runs and only two hits to go along with three strikeouts in the three innings pitched.
UP NEXT
The Monarchs and the Knights will face each other again on Saturday for a USA South doubleheader contest at 1 p.m. Before the 1 p.m. game, Methodist will be recognizing law enforcement from the Fayetteville area for their continued service to the community.
