Monarchs Escape with Win in Game 2 to Sweep Knights

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist baseball finishes of the sweep of Southern Virginia University on Saturday by winning both USA South Conference Games at Armstrong-Shelley Field. Monarchs only needed seven innings to take the first game 13-0 before having to shut down a Knights comeback in the second to preserve a 5-4 victory.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Southern Virginia, 13-0 (7 Inn.); Methodist def. Southern Virginia, 4-4
Records: Methodist 20-10 (10-2 USA South), Southern Virginia 7-14 (4-8)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first contest was all Methodist with the bats getting to Southern Virginia's pitching staff and the one-two combo of Ryan Hill and Jason Quesenberry keeping the Knights offense to non-existent.
  • The Monarchs tallied four runs in the 1st inning followed by eight in the 4th and added one more run in the 5th.
  • Hill pitched six impressive innings of work giving up three hits while striking out six Knights to one walk. Quesenberry threw one inning but struck out all three batters he faced for the combined shutout.
  • A similar story as in Game 1, the second contest saw Methodist score early, with two runs in the 1st. Wesley Hall drove in one followed by Justin Blunt with the other.
  • By the end of the third, the Monarchs doubled their total runs off a triple by Blunt and a single by Will Dagenhart. Rob Wilkerson joined in on the RBI parade with his own an inning later to make it 5-0 after the fourth.
  • The Methodist bats would go quiet from that moment on as they only had two more hits from the fifth through the eighth. This did not stop Southern Virginia's bats from coming alive in the late innings.
  • The seventh and eighth innings witnessed the Knights score two runs apiece for a 5-4 score heading into the ninth. Freshman Chase Carroll came in the eighth to record the final out before securing the Monarchs win by forcing two ground outs and a foul out.
STAT FACTS
  • Austin Skipper gets credited with the win in Game 2 after going seven innings allowing two runs off four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
  • Between both games, Methodist scored 18 runs off 27 hits. Jacob Austin and Gavin Wheeler each had five hits on the day.
