FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist University Department of Athletics on Wednesday announced senior men's golfer
Andre Chi as its 2022 Sykes Cup winner.
The award, named for former MU soccer coach Mason Sykes, has been presented annually to the University's top student-athlete since 1986. Elected in a vote of the department's coaches, the winner must display outstanding athletic achievement and possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
Chi joins six other men's golf team members in the award's 37-year history, including John McCullough (1990), Ryan Jenkins (1993), Mike Adamson (1996), Adam Horton (2004), Mike Wesko (2013) and Larkin Gross (2018).
In Chi's senior season, he had quite the growing list of accolades before adding the Sykes Cup honor on Wednesday.
Back in May, Chi captured the individual medalist honor at the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship becoming the 10
th men's golfer in program history to do so, the first since 2001. After the four-day event at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, he carded a total four-under par 283, which helped secure the program's 13
th National Title.
Chi was named to the NCAA Division III PING All-American (First Team) and All-South Region teams, earning All-Region honors for the second consecutive year.
In April at the conference level, Chi was a USA South Athletic Conference First Team All-Conference selection.
