Monarchs Drop First Game in Captains Classic

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Methodist women's soccer took their first loss of the season in their first game at the Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport University. Virginia Wesleyan University posed a 4-0 non-conference victory over the Monarchs Saturday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs offense struggled to get in a rhythm on Saturday morning, only taking six shots to the Marlins 18.
  • Virginia Wesleyan scored their first goal late in the first half to go up 1-0.
  • Methodist's three shots on goal came in the second half, first from Rachel Johnson at the 62nd minute mark, followed by a free kick on target, 18 minutes later, from Madison Hoopes.
  • Camaryn Piper took the Monarchs final shot of the game with an attempt to put one on the board for Methodist, but a straight drive to the Marlins goalkeeper kept the Monarchs score at zero.
  • Virginia Wesleyan went on to score three more goals in the second half, two of which were within a four minute time frame.
MORE TO IT
  • Both starting goalie Mary Newman as well as Kaylea Carter, who took over between the pipes at the start of the second half, would finish with three saves.
  • Virginia Wesleyan's Rachel Quigley earned the win for the Marlins.
  • Only four corners were taken between both teams during the game, as Methodist took one and Virginia Wesleyan took three.
