Late Penalty Kick Proved to be Deciding Factor in Monarchs Victory

MANCHESTER, N.H.  On the campus of Southern New Hampshire University, the 2022 season for Methodist men's soccer kicked off Friday night. The Monarchs squared off in a non-conference neutral site match against New England College and it was Methodist that took the inaugural game between these two teams by a score of 2-1.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist defeats New England College, 2-1
Records: Methodist 1-0; New England College 0-1
Location: Penman Stadium; Manchester, New Hampshire

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a quiet 13 minutes, the Pilgrims scored the first goal in the 14th minute. Anthony Aquiar had the ball at the top of goalie box, on the near side, and then crossed it to his teammate William Scala. Scala would one time it past the goalies' right side into the back corner.
Four minutes later the Monarchs responded back with their first goal of the season. On a corner attempt, Jayse Gleeson stood at the far flag waiting patiently for his team to get into place. Gleeson than gave the signal before sending the ball toward the near post, where Hudson Zeisman was able to get to a sneak the ball past the keeper.
Casey Atwell kicked in the deciding goal at the 70th minute of the contest. A foul in the box awarded a penalty shot to Methodist, and Atwell rocketed the ball to his right, the goalie's left, to find the back of the net for a 2-1 score.

NUMBERS
New England may have taken more total shots (14 to 12) but it was the Monarchs that held a nine to five advantage in shots on goal.
For the game, Methodist looked to control the ball in the attacking zone a little bit more than the Pilgrims. This is shown in the amount of corners taken by the two teams with the Monarchs (6) taking four more corner attempts than New England (2).
After appearing in 11 games as a freshman last year, Gleeson registered his first collegiate assist.

NEXT UP
Methodist will compete in another neutral site game on Sunday, September 4. Once again the Monarchs return to Penman Stadium to take on the University of Maine, Presque Isle at 11 AM.
