FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist women's soccer gutted out a physical USA South Athletic Conference contest with Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs scored the only goal in the game to take a 1-0 victory over the Knights at Duggins Soccer Stadium.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Southern Virginia, 1-0
Records: Methodist 5-2-1 (1-0 USA South), Southern Virginia 4-4 (0-1 USA South)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium, Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first 45 minutes saw Methodist playing aggressive on both offense and defense. Before the 18th minute, the Monarchs took six of their 11 first half shots.
- Methodist finally found the back of the net in the 40th minute. Corrine Shovlain made a move to get herself open for a shot. Her attempt was saved by Southern Virginia's keeper but the ball was still loose, where Madison Rizer was the first player to get to the ball and punch it in.
- The Monarchs just nearly missed going up by two scores early in the second half. Senior Tatiana Lourenco-Shiber took a shot that looked to be heading in but a diving save by Alyssa Trueman, of the Knights, put a stop to that.
- Later in the contest, Shovlain had another great opportunity to double Methodist lead. Herself and Trueman both went after the ball near the right-side goal post, where they contacted with each other and Shovlain won possession before kicking it into the net. The referee though called off the goal and ruled it a foul on the collison.
- Southern Virginia's best chance to tie the game came in at the 83rd minute. A foul was called inside the Monarch's box and the Knights were awarded a penalty kick. The shot though never made it on target as it went wide left.
STAT FACTS
- Besides shots (15-9) and shots on goal (10-2), Methodist also took more corner kicks than the Knights, respectively 7 to zero.
- Shovlain led the game with a total of four shots, three on net. Lourenco-Shiber was the only other Monarch with two or more shots attempts.
- Splitting time between the pipes were Mary Newman and Carolina Simpkins to preserve the fifth shutout this season by Methodist.
