Brunson's Two Goal Performance Lifts Monarchs to a Victory

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist University women's soccer team turned it on in the second half of their USA South Athletic Conference match against Meredith College. It seems that midfielder Madison Brunson, who scored two goals versus the Avenging Angels a season ago, has their number as she scored twice in their 2-0 win on Tuesday evening at Duggins Soccer Stadium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Meredith, 2-0
Records: Methodist 6-2-1 (2-0 USA South), Meredith 1-4 (0-1 USA South)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium, Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early on in the first half Methodist dominated the possession time in the attacking zone and had some great cross passes into the box. The Monarchs though had trouble finishing those shots.
  • It would take 58 minutes into the match but alas Methodist was able to find the back of the net. Rianna Orello pass the ball into the box, where a Meredith defender got to it first and tried to flick it away. Little did the defender known that Brunson was right there to gain possession and beat the keeper to her right.
  • The Monarchs got an insurance score to seal the game in the 85th minute. Off a free kick, Alyssa Morrell sent the ball inside the box that saw multiple players, including the goalie, going after it. A good bounce saw the ball make it to who else but Brunson before her one timer.
STAT FACTS
  • Methodist clearly showed their ability to generate shots in this contest. The Monarchs outshot the Avenging Angels by a 23 to 5 margin, with an eight to one difference in shots on goal
  • Eight different Methodist players tallied two or more shots
  • Sharing time in net for the game were freshman Carolina Simpkins and senior Mary Newman, who is credited with the victory and improves to a 4-1 goalie record.
