STAUNTON, Va. Methodist volleyball experienced mixed emotions Saturday at a USA South Athletic Conference tri-match, defeating host Mary Baldwin University, 3-2, in a close match but getting beat by Salem College 3-1 in the second match of the day.
The victory over MBU extends a winning streak over the Fighting Squirrels to 26 matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist opened the first set against Mary Baldwin with a 6-0 streak, but a shift in the Fighting Squirrels momentum led to a lead change. Mary Baldwin maintained their lead through the first set to win 25-21.
- Set two witnessed a turnaround for the Monarchs as Geneva Barriger knocked down a kill to direct Methodist on a strong pace. The Monarchs held the lead even after the Fighting Squirrels made a 5-0 run late in the set.
- The third set saw a pivot late in the set. After a kill from Carrie Jordan for a 19-18 advantage, Mary Baldwin tied the game at 19 all with a service ace. The Monarchs could not land another point and came up short 25-19.
- After being down 2-1 overall in sets, Methodist's determination set in for the final two sets. Similar to the third set, the game remained close until the end as multiple mistakes from the Fighting Squirrels gave the Monarchs a 25-20 win.
- The final set was a close battle between the teams but Methodist pulled through thanks to five straight kills from Jeanana Fowler to give the Monarchs a 14-13 lead. An error by the Fighting Squirrels would cost them the game, giving Methodist the 15-13 win.
- In the game against Salem, the Monarchs fell behind 0-2 after the first two sets.
- Methodist was not going down without a fight, opening set three with a 5-1 surge, forcing Salem to take a timeout. From there the Monarchs pressed on, keeping the lead to take the 25-23 victory.
- Methodist's attempted comeback was cut short in the fourth set after a tough battle. With the set tied at 18 all, Methodist could only collect one point while the Spirits advanced on to win 25-19 and defeated the Monarchs 3-1.
FACTS/FIGURES
- Fowler led the attack in both matches with 18 kills against MBU and 21 against SC, posting a new season-high, and hitting 55.7% on the day. Barriger was not far behind with 16 against MBU and 12 against SC.
- Hannah Hewett finished with 40+ assists in each game, ending the day with 85 total.
- Tate led the MBU match with four service aces.
- Leann Sessoms and Fowler combined for 11 blocks against the Fighting Squirrels.
