Clean Sweep by the Monarchs on Day 2 at the Labor Day Smash

DECATUR, Ga.  Methodist volleyball closed out the second day of the Agnes Scott Labor Day Smash by sweeping its two non-conference matches, downing Agnes Scott College, 3-0, in Saturday's early match and then Toccoa Falls College, 3-0, in an afternoon bout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist set the tone in Game 1 against Agnes Scott as the Monarchs dominated on the attack. In the first set, both teams exchanged points early on, but Hannah Hewett's four perfect sets led to four kills for the Monarchs, making for a 6-0 run.
  • Methodist never looked back, limiting the Scotts to just 12 points.
  • The second and third sets saw similar action as the Monarchs kept the pressure at the net.
  • Toccoa Falls gave Methodist some tough competition during the afternoon games but a strong presence from the service line for the Monarchs, contributed to the clean sweep.
  • The first set witnessed five lead changes and four ties before the Monarchs gained momentum. The Scotts to committed five errors during the last 12 points which gave Methodist a 25-13 win.
  • Early in set two, Julia Mundy's three straight service aces led to an 8-0 run for Methodist which forced the Eagles to take a time out. Aniyah Tate and Geneva Barriger crushed it on the attack in set two as both racked up four kills apiece.
  • 15 lead changes and 20 ties made for an exciting third set. Toccoa Falls came out with a chip on their shoulder in set three and started the game off with three straight kills.
  • After a close game between the two teams, it came down to the wire as a 24-24 tie up led to an overtime set. Each time the Eagles took a one point advantage, the Monarchs answered by tying it back up.
  • Methodist went up one after a service ace by Carrie Jordan and a chance to end the game but Toccoa Falls answered with a kill to make it 27 all.
  • In the final points of the set, Jeanana Fowler was able to fire two successful hits over the net and advance the Monarchs to victory.

  • Methodist out hit Agnes Scott 44 to 24, making for a .395 hit percentage in comparison to the Scotts .152.
  • The Monarchs had 39 total defensive digs against the Scotts led by freshman libero, Jordan with 10.
  • Barriger led the team in the game against Agnes Scott with 10 kills and Leann Sessoms and Tate each finished the game against Toccoa Falls with 10.
  • Hewett led both matches in assists with 37 against Agnes Scott and 31 against Toccoa Falls.

Methodist travels to Salem, Virginia for the Maroon Classic, hosted by Roanoke College on Friday, September 9. The Monarchs will compete against Hollins University in the early game at 2p.m. and Roanoke during the late game at 8 p.m.
