Monarchs and Cougars Play to a Draw

DANVILLE, VA.  Methodist women's soccer ended Sunday's match in a 2-2 tie against the Cougars of Averett University, an old opponent in the USA South Athletic Conference up until this year. The Monarchs battled back from a 2-0 deficit at the start of the second half but could not land a third goal to claim the overall victory.

The Monarchs logged goals in the 48th and 59th minutes. Alyssa Morrell's corner led to a Camaryn Piper goal and shortly after, Madison Rizer booted in a shot off the right post. Piper scored her first collegiate goal while Rizer tallied her first for the season.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score:
Methodist ties Averett, 2-2
Records: Methodist 1-0-1 ; Averett 1-0-1
Location: Daily Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium; Danville, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a slow start for the Methodist offense as the team was limited to just six shots in the first half, three of which were blocked before making it to the Averett goalie.
  • The Cougars advanced on a 2-0 lead before going into the break but the determined Monarchs came out in the second half on the hunt.
  • Just under three minutes into the half, Morrell placed her corner kick in the perfect position for Piper to head it into the back of the net over the Averett goalie.
  • Down one, the momentum shifted to the Monarchs as the team pressed on with the attack.
  • 10 minutes later, Rizer knocked one in after the goalie came out to challenge the shot, kicking it over the goalie off the right post to tie the game at two all.
  • After a lightning delay at the 59 minute mark, both teams returned to the field to experience some adverse conditions due to the rainy weather. The two inch deep puddles made it tough for both teams to pass the ball down the field.
  • The Monarchs were given a chance at the 74 minute mark to score the go ahead goal off a penalty kick, but the Averett goalkeeper's quick lateral movement prevented the Methodist advantage.
  • Methodist was unable to get the offense back flowing through the final minutes of the second half, only getting off one shot before closing in a tie.

NUMBERS

  • Averett out shot Methodist 16-11 as both teams finished the game with an even amount of shots on goal (5).

  • The physicality of the Cougars team showed with their 12 registered fouls to the Monarchs seven.

  • Midfielder, Tatiana Lourenco-Shiber, led the team with three shots, followed by forward, Laura Harris with two.
