FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist men's basketball nearly defeated Brevard College on Sunday afternoon after a valiant comeback attempt during the latter part of the second half. The Tornados held on to capture the five-point, 77-72, USA South Athletic Conference win over the Monarchs.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Brevard def. Methodist, 77-72
Records: Methodist 0-15 (0-4 USA South), Brevard 5-11 (1-4)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs once again dug themselves into an early hole, recording just six points compared to the Tornados' 15 after a little over six minutes of action. After a two-point jumper by Montell Moore was offset by two Brevard free throws, Methodist's Blake Lewis knocked down a shot from behind the arc to pull the Monarchs to within six.
- Trailing by 11 with six minutes remaining in the first half, Moore and Clayton Coe hit back-to-back three-pointers to bring Methodist to within five points of Brevard. However, the momentum would quickly shift back in favor of the Tornados as they closed the period on a 15-6 run, just as they'd opened it.
- The Monarchs were the first on the scoreboard in the second half following another three-point basket from Coe. The Tornados responded viciously with an 11-0 run. They continued to return fire, answering Methodist's next two baskets inside the paint with a pair of three-pointers that inflated their lead to 24.
- Methodist appeared dominant in the final 12:30 of the half, starting with three-straight buckets made by Moore. From there, T.J. East and Derrion Hicklen took over as they combined for the team's next 15 points. With eight seconds left in the game, East's layup put Methodist within four points of Brevard, but the Monarchs ran out of time to complete their comeback attempt.
