Mid-Week Match With Meredith Results in Draw

RALEIGH, N.C.  Visiting the Avenging Angels of Meredith College, the Methodist women's soccer team recorded its first tie of the season on Tuesday. For the second match in a row, Kelsey Burge scored the only goal for the Monarchs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist faced pressure early, as goalkeeper Carolina Simpkins was forced into action within the first minute, making a save on the first shot of the game and a second save at the 5' mark. She made six saves in the first 30 minutes, while Meredith's keeper made three.
  • In the 30th minute, junior Kelsey Burge collected the first score of the contest to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. The teams traded one more save each prior to halftime.
  • Methodist opened the second half with the first two shots on goal of the period, both of which were saved. The Avenging Angels attempted a shot just past the 51' mark that was saved by Simpkins, before a second shot slipped by her for a score, tying the match, 1-1. The Monarchs had other opportunities but were unable to reclaim a lead.
NUMBERS
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Carolina Simpkins totaled a career-high 11 saves in the match. She conceded just her fourth goal of the season.
  • Kelsey Burge continues her hot streak, now having scored four times in the last five matches.
  • The Monarchs were denied any corner kick opportunities, while Meredith earned five.
