Monarchs Sweep Spirits in Tuesday Volleyball Thriller

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  In a rematch with Salem College, the Methodist women's volleyball team secured a sweep on Tuesday evening, fending off the Spirits for a 3-0 conference victory. The Monarchs were tightly contested in all three sets but managed to escape unscathed.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Methodist def. Salem, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21)
Records: Methodist 15-7 (10-5 USA South), Salem 17-9 (9-7)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist and Salem battled back and forth to begin the first set, leveling the score on numerous occasions. With the Monarchs trailing 15-13, Jamie Holton recorded a kill, followed by three-straight kills by Jeanana Fowler. Salem tied the score again at 18-18, but the Holton-Fowler duo notched two more kills to put the Monarchs ahead 20-18. Up 24-21, Methodist conceded two more points before Holton closed out the set with another kill.
  • The second set was just as tight as the first. Following a Savannah Hovander kill that tied the score at 9-9, the Spirits rattled off five-straight points to give themselves the biggest lead of the match by either team up to that point. The Monarchs didn't falter, winning seven of the next ten points (including three kills by Fowler, two by Hovander and a service ace by Julia Mundy) to reduce their deficit to just one point (17-16). After two more Salem points, Methodist took the next four, capped off by a Mahala Carter kill.
  • The teams found themselves tied at 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22 before the Monarchs produced three kills to earn the set win. Methodist's final point of the second set came from the hands of Hannah Hewett, who, instead of setting the ball as she often does, chose to send the ball over the net on the team's second hit, finding a gap in Salem's defense for the score.
  • Sparring with the Spirits once more, the Monarchs ripped off a three-point run to take a 10-8 lead. After another three-point run which included a kill by Aniyah Tate and a service ace by Hewett, Methodist possessed a 13-10 advantage. Methodist began scoring points at a rate double to Salem, capturing a 22-15 lead after two consecutive attack errors by the Spirits. Salem fought back, recording six of the next eight points, but with her 13th kill of the night, Holton finished off the match.
