FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Searching for a Homecoming victory on Saturday, the Methodist football team fell short against North Carolina Wesleyan, suffering a 27-3 loss to the Battling Bishops. The Monarchs were held scoreless in the first half and were unable to produce a comeback.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: North Carolina Wesleyan def. Methodist, 27-3
Records: Methodist 1-7 (1-4), North Carolina Wesleyan 4-4 (4-1)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Having received the ball to start the game, N.C. Wesleyan marched down the field and scored on their first drive, as a 45-yard completion from Zachary Marquis to Rahmir Anderson set up an 18-yard touchdown run by Anthony Byrd. The drive lasted four plays and took less than two minutes off the clock.
- The teams exchanged five punts over the remaining duration of the first quarter – two by the Battling Bishops and three from the Monarchs. On a drive that began with 40 seconds left in the first quarter, N.C. Wesleyan pieced together nine plays for 65 yards, culminating the possession with a 24-yard field goal for the first score of the second quarter, giving the Battling Bishops a 10-0 lead.
- N.C. Wesleyan furthered itself from the Monarchs with a score inside the final two minutes of the half – a one-yard rush by Byrd.
- Down 17-0, Methodist received the ball to begin the second half. The Monarchs drove downfield with back-to-back 17-yard completions from quarterback Brandon Bullins (the first caught by KJ Hicklin and the second by Wade Thomas). Facing third-and-five on the six-yard line, Bullins was sacked and fumbled the ball, pushing the Monarchs back to the 20 yard-line, where they would be forced to settle for a field goal. Samuel Andrae's 37-yard attempt was true, making it a two-score game.
- The Battling Bishops matched Methodist's third-quarter score with a field goal of their own, then scored one more touchdown (a nine-yard run by Myles Martin) in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.
