Monarchs Get Win on Senior Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University football team played its final home game of the 2023 season on Saturday afternoon as they hosted USA South foe LaGrange College, in league action. Before the game the Monarchs honored their ten seniors that will be graduating in the spring, and the team sent the seniors out on a great note as they defeated the Panthers by a score of 38-27.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. LaGrange, 38-27
Records: Methodist 2-7 (2-4), LaGrange 0-9 (0-7)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist used it opening possession to score the first touchdown. A heavy run attack by the duo of Keyshaun Pete (four rushes, 18 yards) and Sajari Love (three rushes, 29 yards) drove the Monarchs down the field and then Love capped it off with a five-yard run into the end zone.
  • The next ten points would be scored by LaGrange, 10-7. First, quarterback Rashod Brockington scrambled to his right before finding an open Devonte Scott, three yards out, standing in the end zone to complete a 66-yard, 13 play, drive. On the ensuing kickoff, a muffed catch by Methodist return man saw the Panthers get the ball back on the Monarch 22-yard line. Luckily, Methodist defense was able to hold LaGrange to a field goal, a 35-yarder by Landon Eaker.
  • With a little over four minutes left in the first quarter, the Monarchs used their next offensive possession to regain the lead. Pete, a senior, wrapped up a 10 play, 70-yard, drive with his own five-yard touchdown plunge.
  • On the first drive of the second quarter, LaGrange responded back with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Brockington to Jaden Smith. The Panthers running backs of Goldman Butler VI, Aubrey Carter, and Kolby Crawford each had big runs to help their team get down the field, a nine play, 84-yard drive.
  • Following a punt by each side, Samuel Andrae tied up the ballgame, 17-17, for Methodist with a 30-yard field goal.
  • With less than four minutes until halftime, the Monarchs got the ball back on their own 28-yard line. Once Methodist crossed the 50-yard line, senior quarterback Brandon Bullins completed four of his next five passes to Pete, including a 13-yard catch and run for a touchdown. This gave Methodist a 24-17 advantage heading into the break.
  • On the kickoff to begin the third quarter, a penalty by LaGrange resulted in the team starting its own five-yard line. The Panthers got some breathing room following a 16-yard run by Butler. Then on a 3rd-and-10, Scott got LaGrange into the redzone after catching a 52-yard pass from Brockington. The very next play saw the Panthers score a touchdown as Brockington found Dana Lucas from 14-yards out.
  • With the score tied at 24 all, Bullins would once again lead the Monarchs down the field, 75-yards, to another touchdown. Outside a 34-yard catch by Andre Wilson, the drive was mainly the Wade Thomas show as he was on the receiving end of five pass for 30 yards. Marcus Minehart put the finishing touches on the possession by making an incredible eight-yard catch, in the back corner of the end zone, for the touchdown, the first of his career.
  • Just before the start of the fourth quarter, LaGrange added three points to its score, 31-27, off a 35-yard field goal by Eaker.
  • In the fourth, Methodist turned the ball over on downs after the Panthers stopped the Monarchs on a 4th-and-1 at the LaGrange one-yard line. Four plays later, the Panthers found themselves in a 4th-and-1 situation on their own ten-yard line. LaGrange decided to go for it and were stonewalled by Methodist defense, turning the ball over on downs.
  • Then on the second play of the next Monarch drive, Pete ran the ball from the seven-yard line into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game.

  • Completing 24 of his 32 passes (75 %) was Bullins of Methodist. He totaled 265 passing yards and two touchdowns.
