FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  For the second time in four days, the Methodist women's soccer team earned a 3-0 win in Duggins Soccer Stadium, this time topping the William Peace Pacers. The Monarchs scored early and controlled the ball often, allowing them to improve to 2-1 in USA South play.

Final score: Methodist def. William Peace, 3-0
Records: Methodist 6-4-0 (2-1-0 USA South), William Peace 3-4-2 (0-1-1)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In her first collegiate start, junior Kelsey Burge capitalized on her opportunity, delivering a shot that snuck past the William Peace goalkeeper for a score in the 7th minute. She was assisted by freshman Yaneli Sanchez.
  • In the 24th minute, Burge attempted a penalty kick that was deflected by the goalie, leading to a Methodist corner kick. As the Pacer defense attempted to kick the ball out of the box, sophomore Camaryn Piper stepped up and gained possession, rearing back and lining a shot into the back of the net to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
  • On the opposite end of the field, Carolina Simpkins made two more saves for the Monarchs before halftime, helping hold the visitors scoreless.
  • Despite multiple opportunities early in the second half, the Monarchs were held at bay for some time, with Corrine Shovlain recording a shot in the 64th minute and another in the 65th minute that were both saved. She struck again at the 73' mark, though this time she headed a long pass from Allye Carter into the goal.
  • Methodist's defense remained strong in the second half, as the Monarchs conceded zero shots on goal during the entire period.
