Kelsey Burge Records Game-Winner Against Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va.  Methodist University women's soccer was on the road for a USA South Athletic Conference affair with Mary Baldwin University on Saturday afternoon. Following a quiet first half, the Monarchs managed to score the game-winning goal in the second half and were able to escape SMA Worth Field with a 1-0 victory over the Fighting Squirrels.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist almost scored its first goal of the game in the 42nd minute. A misplay by the Mary Baldwin keeper left a wide-open net for a Monarchs shot by Leslie Reyes-Melendez. The shot would be blocked by a Fighting Squirrel defender to prevent the score.
  • In the 62nd minute, Kelsey Burge broke the scoreless tie for Methodist. A deflected shot got to an open Burge, who then kicked the ball to the post away from the goalie and bounced it into the net.
NUMBERS
  • The Monarchs held a 14 to four shot advantage, including a six to three shots on goal, against the Fighting Squirrels.
  • For the third consecutive match, Methodist has not allowed a goal.
  • The Monarchs hold an outstanding 15-0 all-time record over Mary Baldwin.
