Methodist Drops USA South Tournament Match at Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va.  In a rematch of the regular-season finale, the sixth-seeded Methodist women's volleyball team faced the third-seeded Knights of Southern Virginia on Tuesday in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. The Monarchs played a tight match with the host team and were one point away from forcing a fifth set before suffering defeat in the fourth.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-22, 26-24)
Records: Methodist 16-10, Southern Virginia 16-16
Location: Knight Arena; Buena Vista, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist trailed the first set 4-1 before leveling the score at 5-5 after a trio of kills by Jeanana Fowler, Savannah Hovander and Jamie Holton. With Southern Virginia leading 9-8, the Knights notched five-straight points to take a six-point advantage. The Monarchs answered with four points of their own, including two kills for Fowler. Still, the Knights maintained their lead and matched anything Methodist produced, grinding their way to a 25-20 set victory.
  • Methodist took care of business in the second set. Back-to-back kills by Fowler gave the Monarchs the first two points. Up 8-6, Methodist recorded four-straight points, including a kill and a service ace from Holton. The Knights fought back, making the score 14-12 before a five-point run for the Monarchs (with two kills and a block assist by Fowler) made the difference seven points. Methodist easily put the set away, trading points with SVU before recording the final four points of the set.
  • The teams exchanged multiple leads as the third set progressed. With the Knights ahead 11-9, Methodist record four points in a row to gain a two-point advantage. The two teams would see the score tied at 15, 16, 17, 18 and 20 before Southern Virginia rattled off three consecutive points to take a 23-20 lead. The Monarchs collected the next two points, but the Knights claimed the set with the final two points.
  • Methodist played from behind in the fourth set, conceding the first three points of the period before falling into a 13-6 hole. The tide quickly shifted as the Monarchs picked up nine of the next ten points (two kills for Fowler and two for Aniyah Tate), giving Methodist a one-point edge. Neck and neck once again, the teams battled to a 19-18 SVU advantage before Methodist blew through five-straight points to move to a 23-19 lead. At 24-20, the Monarchs had the chance to extend the match and their season, but the Knights had other plans, recording six points – their most consecutive points all night – to finish out the match.
MORE TO IT
  • Leading the match with 18 kills, Jeanana Fowler helped Methodist win the second set by earning seven kills during the period. She also tied her season high of total blocks with six on the night.

  • With Methodist down 13-7 in the fourth set, Georgia Van Kirk made her first appearance of the match and just her eighth of the season. The Monarchs fought to a score of 17-17 with her on the court as she recorded one block assist.
  • For a final time this season, Hannah Hewett led the team in assists (30) while Blake O'Brien led the team in digs (21).
