HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs had a shaky start, shooting 2-for-9 from the field as Virginia Wesleyan took an early 9-4 lead. As the Marlins missed their next seven shots, Methodist produced an 8-0 scoring run that included scores by Rebecca McGaughnea, Aniyah Tate and Kiley Hicks to give the Monarchs a 12-9 advantage with a little more that one minute left in the first quarter. The Marlins closed the gap, but Methodist remained in front, taking a 14-13 lead into the second period.

There were a total of ten lead changes during the second quarter as the teams traded basket for basket, with Hicks securing the final score of the period to give Methodist a one-point lead (29-28) heading into halftime.
  • Tate scored the first two baskets of the third quarter for Methodist, helping fuel the Monarchs to a 37-32 lead halfway through the frame. Methodist's Jessica Drake and Arriana White traded two three-pointers with Virginia Wesleyan as the teams hit from behind the arc on four consecutive possessions. With two layups to end the quarter, Jillian Peterson extended Methodist's lead to nine points.
  • Methodist erupted with a 10-2 scoring run to begin the fourth quarter, emphasized by back-to-back three-pointers from Drake. The Monarchs reached their largest lead of the night (19 points) with 2:39 to go as Tate made a layup to put Methodist ahead 66-47. Virginia Wesleyan scored the next five points before Serenity Webb scored the final bucket for the Monarchs.
