Monarchs Fall in First Matchup at Cruzin Classic

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. Three pointers rained down as the Methodist women's basketball team faced the Simpson College Storm on Wednesday at the Cruzin Classic in Florida. The Monarchs outscored their opponent in the first quarter before falling behind for an eventual 78-56 defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist's Rebecca McGaughnea scored the first basket of the game before Simpson unleashed a 10-0 run. The Monarchs collected themselves and put together an 11-1 run over the final 3:15 of the first quarter, with Kiley Hicks leading the charge with six points.
  • Leading 13-11, Methodist scored first to start the second quarter as senior Aniyah Tate delivered a quick layup. Jillian Peterson sank her second three-pointer of the game to give the Monarchs a 22-18 advantage, but the Storm answered with two layups to tie the score at 22-22 with 6:20 remaining in the half. Jessica Drake responded with a three of her own to put Methodist back in front, but the next five minutes were all in Simpson's favor as the Storm scored 13-straight points, including three successful shots from behind the arc. Tate scored a layup in the closing seconds of the half to get Methodist back within eight points entering halftime.
  • Simpson picked up right where it left off to start the third quarter, sinking a pair of three-pointers in the first minute and a half. Following a layup by Tate to cut the difference to 12 (43-31) with seven minutes left in the quarter, the Storm hit another triple. Tate quickly answered with another layup on Methodist's next possession, but Simpson hit from deep once again on the other end of the court for the team's fourth three-pointer of the period. Simpson's lead stretched to 19 points before the third quarter came to a close.
  • The Storm opened the fourth quarter with a 15-4 run, including three more strikes from deep. Hicks and La'Kayia Hunt recorded four points each to end the game on an 8-1 run in favor of the Monarchs and close the final gap to 22 points.

  • The Storm shot 48% from three-point range on the night, making 12 triples on 25 attempts.
  • For the fourth time this season, Aniyah Tate led the Monarchs in scoring, dropping 18 points in 28 minutes of play.
  • Kiley Hicks recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
