FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist women's basketball hosted Brevard College on Saturday afternoon, in their annual Play4Kay game. This tightly contested USA South Athletic Conference game saw the Tornadoes edge out the Monarchs, 64-56, inside the March F. Riddle Center.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Brevard def. Methodist, 64-56
Records: Methodist 13-9 (8-7 USA South), Brevard 14-8 (10-5)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The duo of Kiley Hicks and Aneesa Irizarry tallied the first five points for Methodist as the team took an early 5-2 lead. Brevard would score seven consecutive points to take a two-point advantage followed by going on another 7-0 run to close out the quarter for a nine-point lead, 18-9.
- Makayla Street kept the Tornado scoring run going by recording three of the first five points of the new period. Irizarry registered the first Monarch points of the second by knocking down a pair from the free throw line and Hicks followed suit by making four from the stripe herself. A basket by Jillian Peterson gave life to Methodist and resulted in the team getting the next six points of the game before some free throws by Makenna Parkins of Brevard made it 30-24, in favor of the Tornadoes, at the half.
- A 7-0 run by Methodist to start the new stanza gave the Monarchs their first lead, 33-32, since the seven-minute mark of the first quarter. Brevard did not allow Methodist to have that lead long as the Tornadoes recorded the next six points. As the time in the period was expiring, a Brevard six-point advantage was cut in half with a three by Jessica Drake and the Monarchs would only find themselves down 47-44 heading into the fourth.
- Irizarry and Peterson combined for the first seven Methodist points to put their team in front, 51-50, once again. A huge momentum swing three-pointer by Chyna Pouncey helped the Tornadoes go up with 55-51 with three minutes left in regulation. A basket by Hicks got the Monarchs back within two of the lead but some late game free throws by Brevard put the contest out of reach.
